In this podcast I discuss the clinical and historical dimensions of meningitis with Pediatrician Janet Gilsdorf, author of Continual Raving: A History of Meningitis and the People Who Conquered It.
Janet is Robert Kelch Research Professor Emerita, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School, and at the Department of Epidemiology, University of Michigan School of Public Health.
Our discussion covered the clinical manifestations and course of meningitis before and after the advent of antibiotics.
Janet also traced the history of our understanding of meningitis, noting the contributions of the clinicians and researchers who identified the pathology and microbiology of the potentially fatal disease.
The podcast also covers the developments that led to the introduction of meningitis vaccination, and the public health implications of vaccine hesitancy.
